Okay, so you’re not going to find heaps of snow or a White Christmas in Isla Mujeres this time of year, but that doesn’t mean there’s not loads of holiday spirit infusing the island right now!
Down here off the tropical shores of the Yucatan, the Yuletide season and New Year’s celebrations are heartily observed—on a religious basis, certainly, but also as a chance to spend time with family and friends and to mark 2016’s wind-down and 2017’s birth with suitable enthusiasm!
The Feast of Our Lady Guadalupe
We’ve already seen the Feast of Our Lady Guadalupe (aka the Festival of the Virgin of Guadalupe), held on December 12 to commemorate the appearance of the Virgin Mary to the peasant Juan Diego in Mexico City back in 1531: a vision, the story goes, that led to the establishment of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. (The feast day marks the journey of millions from all across Mexico to the church, which is more visited than any other pilgrimage site in the Catholic world.)
And then of course there’s Mexico’s Christmas lead up celebration, Las Posadas, playing out over nine days between December 16 and the 24th. Las Posadas includes many reenactments of Mary and Joseph’s trek to Bethlehem and the nativity of Jesus as well as associated observances. (Las Posadas means “shelter” or “lodging” in Spanish, and refers in the Christmastime tradition to the inn where Mary and Joseph sought accommodations the night of Jesus’s birth.)
New Year’s Festivities in Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres greets the New Year, meanwhile, with as much fanfare and revelry as anyplace else. It’s an amazing place to be for this all-out party, take it from us—especially because you’ve got the deliciously warm temperatures of our tropical isle instead of the bone-chilling cold many Northern Hemisphere folks experience for the proceedings! Music, fireworks, good food and drink: We’ve got all the ingredients for doing the whole New Year’s Eve thing right down here, and locals and tourists alike get in on the fun.
