Underwater Museum in Isla Mujeres

Enjoy a different view of Isla Mujeres – underwater! A visit to the Museo Subacuatico Arte, or MUSA, will provide one of the most exotic memories of your stay in Mexico. MUSA is the largest underwater museum in the world, and its convenient location means you can book your excursion from the Privilege Aluxes and enjoy a fun-filled day of underwater adventure. Our concierge team is available to help with booking your MUSA excursion.

The underwater museum was started as a means to boost the local ecosystem and lure tourists away from the coral reef around the area. Human activity has damaged the local reefs over the years, and the MUSA hopes to prevent future damage and let the coral regenerate. The project was started by Dr. Jamie Gonzalez Cano, who collaborated with sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor to build the museum. Once complete, the museum will have 12 galleries and over 1,300 artificial habitats.

Located in the National Marine Park of Cancun, Isla Mujeres, and Punta Nizuc, there are over 500 sculptures in the museum. Many have already been overgrown in algae and coral, making for a beautiful sight. Don’t forget your underwater camera!

One of the most interesting pieces in the collections you’ll see in the MUSA is the Anthropocene. It’s a sculpture of a Volkswagen Bug near Manchones Reef. It’s filled with nooks and crannies to attract marine life, specifically lobster, as it has shelving built inside where lobster like to sleep.

Another beautiful piece, symbolizing the current environmental situation, the Man on Fire sculpture features 75 holes with fire coral planted inside. But, don’t get too close — fire coral stings when touched!

There are a variety of ways to experience the MUSA. You have the option of taking a glass-bottom boat tour, a SCUBA diving tour, or a snorkeling tour. Or, if swimming isn’t your thing, you can also view the MUSA from above, flying high in the sky while parasailing with a bird’s eye view. To get the best views of the sculptures and the marine life in the museum, SCUBA diving is most recommended.

If you have any questions about the local area, our concierge team is available to assist you. We are here to make your Mexico vacation the best experience possible!
