An absolute must-do daytrip from our tropical paradise of Privilege Aluxes is Punta Sur, the far southeastern tip of Isla Mujeres.
It’s certainly one of the island’s single most beautiful spots: a cliff-edged cape jutting into the Caribbean, the easternmost terra firma in Mexico. Here the “Cliff of the Dawn” (Acantilado del Amanecer) marks the first place in the country to greet the rising sun each and every day. You can see the skyline of Cancun from this dreamy vantage, though the overwhelming vista is one of turquoise-to-azure waters unfurling to the horizon.
Outdoor Artwork & the Spirit of Ixchel
You’ll reach Punta Sur—a narrow grassy headland edged by lovely pale cliffs and laced with walking paths—via the Garrafon Natural Reef Park, known among other things for its swimming-with-dolphins experience, its excellent snorkeling opportunities, and its plentiful hammocks and lounge chairs. The Cliff of the Dawn scenery is the main attraction, but there’s much else to see here, not least the Punta Sur Sculpture Garden featuring artwork by artists from Mexico and beyond. The ruins of a Mayan temple lie here, too: testament to the deep-rooted indigenous sacredness of Isla Mujeres, the “Island of Women” dedicated to Ixchel, goddess of fertility and the moon. (Ixchel shows up in the sculpture garden, mind you.)
The Ravishingly Raw Shore of Punta Sur
The bannistered walkways of Punta Sur lead right down the limestone scarp to the surging surf, which forms a gorgeous rugged counterpoint to those powdery Caribbean sands you’ll find over on our side of Isla Mujeres. Whether you’re down at breaker-level or admiring the panorama from the Punta Sur heights above, this is indeed the perfect place to welcome a new day dawning over the sea—though, to be perfectly honest, this southeastern toe of the island is transfixing any time of day.
Point Those Toes to Punta Sur
From the enigmatic visage of Ixchel and the white lighthouse to the wheeling seabirds and surf-lashed rocks, Punta Sur is one of the most magical settings on the Yucatan coast. With deluxe digs at Privilege Aluxes, you’re within easy reach of this extraordinary spot, and we highly recommend you make the trip—whether for a Cliff of the Dawn sunrise or a long, lazy afternoon of lounging, strolling, and picture-taking.
