Isla Mujeres Land Lover Activities & Things to Do

Whether it’s cavorting with whale sharks or marveling at the sunken sculptures of the Underwater Museum, true magic awaits beneath Isla Mujeres waters for those of our Privilege Aluxes guests willing to get wet.

But you can also have a thoroughly magical getaway here on our idyllic Caribbean island without stepping foot in the water, if you so choose. Here are some of the top landlubber-friendly things to do and see on a luxury vacation getaway to Isla Mujeres with Privilege Aluxes!

Tour the “Painted Ladies” of Centro

El Centro, the downtown zone of Isla Mujeres, is a must-see for its restaurants and shops—and for its utterly colorful infrastructure. The multihued storefronts and homes that have been called the Painted Ladies of Centro have tropical flair to spare, and make signature island photo ops.

Hang Out With the Flippered Inhabitants of the Tortugranja

The Tortugranja (Turtle Farm) cares for wounded or ill sea turtles that have been rescued from local waters, rehabilitating those that can be eventually returned to the wild and providing a plush permanent home for any too impaired for release. Get an up-close look at these calm and lovely marine reptiles—not uncommonly sighted by snorkelers and divers off Isla Mujeres—as well as other sealife at this fine institution.

Tour the Muraled Sea Walls of Isla Mujeres

Artists from the world over painted the marvelous public art on display in Isla Mujeres as part of the Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans project overseen by the PangeaSeed Foundation. These vibrant paintings evoke the diverse seas around the island and their intrinsic connection to humanity.

Visit Mundaca’s Tomb in the Isla Mujeres Cemetery

In the mid 1800s, a large portion of Isla Mujeres composed the sprawling hacienda of the Spanish pirate and slave-trader Mudaca, who became smitten with a local girl much younger than himself, whom he called La Trigueña (The Brunette) and who nonetheless spurned him. Besides the remnants of that hacienda, you can visit the tomb Mundaca built for himself in the Isla Mujeres cemetery, complete with an engraved skull-and-crossbones and these words: “As you are, I was. As I am, you will be.” Tantalizing stuff—though the pirate’s bones don’t actually lie here, as he died on the Yucatan mainland in Mérida.

Sample Island Nightlife

Isla Mujeres is refreshingly quieter and more laidback than nearby Cancun, but that doesn’t mean you can’t revel deep into the night in beachfront clubs and bars!

Take in a Famous Isla Mujeres Sunset

Isla Mujeres is renowned for its stunning sunsets, and many of our Privilege Aluxes guests make an effort to savor each and every one of them during their stay. Watching the sun slip down the horizon over Cancun across the water is the perfect way to cap off an Isla Mujeres day, whether you spend it landlubbing around or donning swim gear!
