Isla Mujeres Attractions & Site Seeing

Coming to Isla Mujeres by thinking about it for your next vacation? You’re probably wondering what you should do while you’re on the island!

If so, you’re in the right place!

We live here on Isla Mujeres full-time, so we know exactly what our visitors love to come and see when they’re here (and we have to admit that we visit these sites quite often ourselves as well!).

To help you better plan your vacation to Isla Mujeres, we’ve compiled a list of the top attractions and sites you absolutely must see while you’re here.

Lighthouses

Sure, you can see lighthouses in the United States and Canada, but they are nothing like lighthouses you’ll find here (especially when it comes to the beautiful backdrop).

We actually have several lighthouses on the island, and all of them were built during World War II by the Mexican Navy. These lighthouses help boats navigate around or to the island safely. There are three that you’ll want to visit: El Farito (the smallest lighthouse), the Punta Sur lighthouse at the tip of the island to the south, and El Faro (literally, “the lighthouse” in Spanish), which is the largest of all three.

The Cemetery

Sounds crazy, right? In the United States, you probably wouldn’t go to a cemetery for fun unless you were in, say, Boston or Washington DC.

But in Mexico, cemeteries are extremely beautiful because of the time and care that family members and loved ones take in making the tombs look nice. It’s a matter of honor and respect for those past.

When it comes to cemeteries, the one here on the island takes the cake. As long as you are respectful, feel free to take pictures of the beautiful, colorful gravesites and read the lovely phrases on each of the tombs.

Town Square (The Zocalo)

Every city in Mexico has a town square, and our island is no different. This is the area where you go if there’s any sort of celebration or large gathering in town, and people are always there talking, laughing, and having fun. It’s very close to the City Hall, the Catholic Church, and other central locations that are important to those who live on the island.

As you can see, Isla Mujeres is the perfect place to call your home away from home when you take your family or couples vacation this year. And our luxurious rooms and suites are just waiting for you to call them your own!
