In 2015, Isla Mujeres received a coveted designation from Mexico’s Secretariat of Tourism: that of Pueblo Mágico, or “Magical Town.” These officially classified Magical Towns are destinations in Mexico deemed to offer some slightly intangible combination of attractions and atmosphere, including cultural, culinary, artistic, and historical elements as well as natural splendor and an overall welcoming spirit.
Isla Mujeres is one of more than 80 Magical Towns sprinkled all across Mexico. Here at Privilege Aluxes, we certainly agree that our Caribbean isle—so close yet so far from the hustle-and-bustle of Cancun and the Riviera Maya—has those magical attributes in spades! Come experience them for yourself with a luxury getaway at our beachfront resort.
Magic in Ample Supply on Isla Mujeres
From the folkloric to the ecological, Isla Mujeres seduces its visitors with a remarkable natural and cultural environment packed within a delightfully small space. Visit this Magical Town, for example, and you’ll be treading ground associated by the Aztecs with their moon goddess of fertility and medicine: the great Ixchel, aka Lady Rainbow. You can visit the site of her long-ago temple and pay your respects at a modern statue down at Punta Sur. (Speaking of history, don’t forget we can arrange a variety of historical tours both on the island and at nearby sites on the mainland, such as Chichen Itza.)
Magic’s on display in El Centro, or downtown Isla Mujeres, where you’ll find some wonderful merchants of both traditional and modern character, plus plenty of opportunities to sample the island’s twists on Mexican cuisine. You’ll also love the strikingly colored homes here: the famous “Painted Ladies” of El Centro.
On the subject of art, Isla Mujeres is also well known for its public murals, namely the ocean-themed works created as part of the Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans initiative by the PangeaSeed Foundation.
Then, of course, there are the natural treasures of Isla Mujeres, which include some fabulous tropical beaches such as the celebrated Playa Norte and some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving sites in the Mexican Caribbean. Isla Mujeres supports one of the world’s great congregations of whale sharks—the biggest fish in the sea—during the summertime, offering unbeatable opportunities to swim alongside these utterly harmless and majestic filter-feeders. A similarly incredible gathering of Atlantic sailfish takes place in the late winter and spring, when “baitballs” of sardines draw these sleek and ravishingly beautiful billfish: another spectacle that draws snorkelers and underwater photographers from the world over.
