Punta Sur

An absolute must-do daytrip from our tropical paradise of Privilege Aluxes is Punta Sur, the far southeastern tip of Isla Mujeres.

It’s certainly one of the island’s single most beautiful spots: a cliff-edged cape jutting into the Caribbean, the easternmost terra firma in Mexico. Here the “Cliff of the Dawn” (Acantilado del Amanecer) marks the first place in the country to greet the rising sun each and every day. You can see the skyline of Cancun from this dreamy vantage, though the overwhelming vista is one of turquoise-to-azure waters unfurling to the horizon.

Isla Mujeres Murals

Intricate handicrafts, brightly painted houses, statuary of both the above- and below-water kind—you don’t have to look hard on Isla Mujeres to find artistry. And some of the most striking public art on the island are the Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans murals, which bring the exotic majesty of the undersea realm that surrounds our Caribbean outpost to the streets.

It’s Carnival Time in Isla Mujeres!

Easily one of the most exciting seasons is just about upon us: Carnival! No doubt about it: Though our homegrown celebrations may not be as famous or as huge as those in Veracruz or Mazatlan (let alone Rio de Janeiro), Isla Mujeres definitely knows how to mark the occasion with some major flair!

Ixchel The Goddess of Fertility

If you’ve stayed with us before at Privilege Aluxes, you may well know Isla Mujeres as a spectacular tropical paradise: a place to marinate on Caribbean sands, scuba dive amid coral reefs and underwater sculpture gardens, or snorkel with whale sharks. It’s worth reflecting, however, on a much older, and inevitably more mysterious, association this island has: as sacred ground dedicated to the Mayan goddess Ixchel (“ee-shell”), also known as Ix Chel, Goddess O, and Lady Rainbow.
